Conejo Players to put ‘Rags’ on boards

Conejo Players Theatre will present "Rags," a poignant musical about the pitfalls of immigrants’ assimilation, from Nov. 8-Dec. 7 at their theatre, 351 S. Moorpark Road, Thousand Oaks. "Rags" is the story of Rebecca, a naïve Russian immigrant who arrives at Ellis Island in 1910 with her young son, David, in search of her husband, Nathan.

When she is finally reunited with Nathan, Rebecca discovers that his assimilation is not entirely for the best. Nathan’s desire to change their name and strip away their ethnic culture in order to move up in the world distresses Rebecca, whose gradual enlightenment leads her into union activities against the very men her husband so hopes to impress.

Featuring music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Joseph Stein, "Rags" is described as a "deeply moving and inspirational musical [that] is a sweeping saga of awakenings and disappointments, of greed and power, and most of all, of strength and love."

Performances are Thursdays-Sundays; tickets range from $12-$16. Cost for opening night with a champagne buffet is $18.

For tickets, please call (805) 495-3715.
